Online courses are different than face-to-face courses. There are certain skills that an online student should have (or develop) in order to be successful in her or his online learning. Before enrolling in an online course, it is critical for you to know what is expected from you and what is needed to be a successful online learner.

Interpreting the Results

  • Statements that are weighted 3 and 4 points represent the most important skills and abilities needed to effectively and successfully take an online course. The most successful online learners usually tend to check all the statements in column A (in the left). However, this does not mean that you cannot acquire those skills and develop those qualities. With hard work and dedication, you should be able to be a successful online student.
  • Statements weighted 1 point and 2 points also address some important skills; however, those skills or abilities do not automatically impede your academic success. Those skills and capabilities can be easily developed as the online course starts.

A total score of 19 or higher in column B (in the right) is an indication that taking online courses might not be a good fit for you. It is likely that you will face some difficulties throughout your online experience. That being said, if you think that taking online courses is the best option for you, it would be beneficial for you to grasp the challenges that you might face and to determine what you need to overcome those obstacles and be a successful online learner.
