The School of Education at North Carolina Central University offers a fully online program in Middle Grades Education (6-9). The second-degree program is intended for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field but would like to pursue a degree and a teaching license in Middle Grades Education.
Students in the online second-degree program in Middle Grades Education follow a rigorous program of study, which integrates content knowledge, skills, and pedagogy. Students are prepared to work in diverse cultural contexts through field experiences, technological foci, course assignments, and required licensure assessments. As part of the second-degree program, students earn up to 24 credits in science or social studies. By fulfilling this requirement, students are exposed to multiple subject areas within science (e.g., physical science, biology) or social sciences (e.g., history, geography). This prepares students to teach science or social studies to students in middle-level (6-9) public schools and leads to an initial North Carolina teaching license in the chosen concentration area (i.e., science or social studies).
